THE REAL SCOOP WHILE ON A CRUISE SHIP

You hear stories from friends, see advertisements in magazines,
and probably see commercials on television but when it comes to cruise
ships, what really goes on? As you will discover in this article,
cruises are actually not as complicated as you might think. Most people
know that cruise ships are notorious for the food. From the time you wake
up until the time you go to bed (well after midnight), there is food ñ not
just any food but massive and delicious food created by master chefs. In
addition to the food, there are other things important to understand
about cruises such as sleeping accommodations and activities.

Just as there are many different choices when it comes to food, cruise
ships also offer all types of activities. Because of this, you never
have the opportunity to be bored. Some people prefer to lay out in the sun
up on deck, some people enjoy working out in the gym or running along the
jogging track, some people love to spend time in the casino, theater, or
nightclubs, and other people look forward to the ports of calls where
they can swim, scuba dive, hike, and take historical and cultural hikes
or tours. The great thing is that cruise ships are designed to
accommodate all these interests and more.

Regarding cruise ship attire, it really depends on the type of cruise
you take. For example, most of the better known cruise lines will have
one to two nights where passengers are invited to wear formal or
semi-formal wear. Generally, this would include a night of dining and
perhaps a night of dancing. However, you will also find a number of
cruise ships that are more laid back where 'country club casual' or
'business casual' is more appropriate. When looking at the various
cruises, keep the attire in mind since not everyone wants to wear a
tuxedo or formal gown at dinner while other people consider this an
important part of the cruise experience.

The cabin accommodations should also be understood. The size and type
of accommodations are typically associated with the amount of money
you want to spend. For some passengers, their primary focus is spending
time milling about the ship and enjoying excursions. Therefore,
spending an exorbitant amount of money just for a place to sleep does not
make much sense. However, keep in mind that the lower end cabins are
small, often around 200 square feet. Therefore, if you prefer more
room, even if you do not plan to spend a lot of time in the cabin, you
should
book a larger room.

Most often, todays cruise lines are designed so the majority of cabins
have a beautiful ocean view, which makes the smaller room a little
easier to handle. In addition to the standard size cabins, the larger
cruise ships have suites but for a ship of good size, it may only have 50 to
70 suites. For this reason, if you want larger accommodations, you
probably want to book far in advance. Now, one important note when
booking your room ñ sometimes, the suites will not fill up for one reason
or another. For that reason, just a few days before voyage, you might
contact your travel agent to see if there are any open suites and if so,
find out if you can secure one for a fraction of the original cost.

Another important factor when choosing the cabin is that if you tend to
get seasick, a room in the center of the ship will generally not have as
much movement as other cabins. Therefore, try to secure a mid-ship or
lower deck cabin so the ride on the ocean is calmer. Finally, some people
have a problem with being claustrophobic. As mentioned, the standard
size cabins are small. Many of the newer cruise ships now have cabins
with private balconies or verandahs. The good news is that the price is
still very affordable while you have a little more openness that makes
travel much nicer.
