SEASICKNESS ON A CRUISE

For people interested in taking a cruise, probably the number one
concern over anything else is becoming seasick.  While seasickness and
other health problems at sea can be a problem, it is important to know
that you have options for making the problem better and that cruise
lines work very hard to ensure every passenger is safe and well so he or
she can enjoy the cruise!

As a cruise ship makes it way through the ocean waters, whenever
whitecaps are involved (caused by rough winds), the ship can be
affected, meaning it rocks to and fro causing a problem for some of the
passengers.  Keep in mind that the movement of a cruise ship is nothing
like that of a small boat, meaning the management of seasickness is
not just likely but possible.

With the big cruise ships, the design includes what are called
stabilizers that come out of the hull below the waterline.  These
stabilizers work by keeping the cruise ship from rocking back and forth
so drastically.  As the cruise line industry became more popular,
experts realized that new technology was needed in the design to help
make cruises smoother.  Interestingly, not all passengers deal with
seasickness but for those who do, generally a doctor can prescribe
special medication to help reduce or eliminate the effects.  However,
for this medication to work, the passenger must take it prior to getting
ill.

When taking a cruise, it is possible to experience other illness.  As an
example, all cruise ships are comprised of hundreds if not thousands of
passengers as well as crew.  These individuals come from all over the
world and all walks of life.  Therefore, even though cruise ships are
quite large, you are still confined to a specific amount of space.
Therefore, if a passenger were ill and sitting at the same dinner table
or if a singles cruise is taken whereby a room is shared with someone ill,
chances are the sick person would infect the healthy person.  The good
news is that most cruise ships have an onboard doctor and/or nurse that
can diagnose and treat.

Two relatively common illnesses on cruise ships are known as the
Norwalk Virus and Norovirus.  Both of these involve gastrointestinal
problems, making people feel nauseated and tired, followed by
diarrhea and/or vomiting.  The problem for these cruise ship illnesses
is that they are passed most often as one person touches something that
had been touched by an infected person  For example, if someone with one
of these viruses uses the handrails while heading to the theater, and
then another person walks behind them, touching the same handrail, the
germs have been transferred.  Because of this, as you take your cruise,
you will see trained staff working throughout the day and night wiping
down handrails, bathroom fixtures, doorknobs, bar stools, and other
items to get rid of the germs.  However, each passenger also needs to take
responsibility of washing his or her hands prior to eating and after
using the restroom, always using hot water and soap.

The hospital and medical facilities aboard a cruise ship are actually
very sophisticated.  While on a cruise, if you should become ill or be
injured, the ships facility will require a copy of your health
insurance card.  If you do not have insurance or simply prefer, you can
pay cash or credit card.  In fact, some cruise lines are set up to accept
only cash or credit card whereby you would be reimbursed by the
insurance company once returning home.

Although major illness or injury would more than likely require a trip
back home from a port of call, many common problems can be treated very
effectively.  In addition to fantastic food, wonderful activities,
exciting excursions and shows, knowing cruise ships also have medical
care provided by a trained and licensed doctor provides 100% peace of
mind.
